According to Hong Yang-ho [1724], “the symbols used in the onmun are pictographic representations of the mouth at the time of articulation” (Hoyt 2000: 156).

The notes state clearly that five of the original seventeen consonants were shaped according to the form of the organs of speech, “k” ㄱ representing the root of the tongue closing the epiglottis, “n” ㄴ representing the tongue touching the hard palate, “m” ㅁ representing the mouth, “s” ㅅ representing the tooth, and “Y” *(gamma) ㅇ representing the throat … In addition, some of the other consonants, including those formed by adding the aspiration stroke, are said to have been created pictographically as follows:

ㅌ “t” “flapping of the tongue”

ㅂ “p” “half-open mouth”

ㅍ “p’ ” “open mouth”

ㅈ “ch” “gums and teeth”

ㅎ “Y” (*gamma aspirate) “throat and palate.
